Baethe Treppen from Muehlhausen is a family business that has been manufacturing wood products since 1936. Over the last few decades, the company has specialised in the production of a wide range of staircases. When the current managing director, Toni Baethe, took over the company in 2004, it was producing around 35 staircases a year. Today, the company produces 1,600 staircases a year. At the time, Baethe Stairs was using software that had reached its limits in terms of functionality. Looking for a more powerful solution, they tried out Compass Software's stair construction software at a partner company in the region and finally purchased it themselves in 2008. Toni Baethe remembers: “Compass Software was the market leader. I'd say that 90% of all stair builders were using Compass Software, so that's what we wanted. Today, Compass Software is still the market leader and a pioneer in innovation.”
From Traditional Craftsmanship to High-Tech
Initially, the company worked manually with the software, printing stairs as 1:1 templates on a plotter. As the number of incoming orders increased, Baethe Treppen decided to integrate its first CNC machine, a 5-axis MAKA PE 80, with Compass Software in 2011. Production was run in two shifts to optimise machine utilisation. A second CNC machine followed in 2019, a 5-axis HOMAG, which is also run in two shifts. The company sells its finished stairs through an extensive dealer network.

This allows the company to measure almost all projects and then import and design the stairs quickly and accurately in Compass Software. Our experienced CAD designers can plan a bolted stair in as little as 15 minutes using the efficient Compass modules.” Baethe Treppen uses the software to design and produce many different types of staircases, such as bolted staircases, cantilever staircases, folded staircases, HPL staircases, glass staircases, and more. The company also produces fire-resistant wooden stairs for partner companies in the region. The CNC production also runs smoothly and reliably.
